Tenerife, from the summit down to the sea.
The mountain above the cloud, the whales that never leave, the gorge you cannot walk into without booking first. Every tour on the island, priced and ranked by the travellers who went.
The pilot whales off Tenerife never leave.
A resident pod lives all year in the deep channel between Los Cristianos and La Gomera. No season to miss and no long crossing: most boats are among them within half an hour of the harbour wall.
The Tenerife days everyone comes home talking about.
The volcano, the whales, the water park, the gorge, the cliffs and the sky over Las Cañadas. Six days most holidays here get built around, and the best way to book each one.
Three ways up Mount Teide, and how to choose.
Every Mount Teide tour →Spain’s highest point stands 3,715 metres up, and the road to it climbs through a lava desert most people only photograph from the coach window. These three carry the most travellers between them; the full list splits the rest by how far up you actually want to get.

Cable car to 3,555 metres
Up through Las Cañadas by coach, eight minutes in the cabin, then the crater floor spread out below and La Gomera floating on the cloud.

What a day out on Tenerife costs.
Every tour on the site, sorted by what one adult really pays. A good island day starts at the price of lunch on the front.
Harbour boat trips, park entry, surf lessons and the guachinche food runs up the hill.
The classic days: Teide with the cable car, whale catamarans, quad runs through the lava, stargazing with dinner.

The things you can only do on Tenerife.
Beaches and boat trips belong to every island. A 3,715-metre volcano, a night sky protected by law and a pod of whales that never migrates belong to this one.

The Sky Above Las Cañadas
A regional sky law limits streetlight spill, flight paths and radio traffic over the summit, which is why the observatory at Izaña sits where it does. Above the trade-wind cloud the air is dry and still, and on a moonless night the Milky Way is bright enough to walk by. Trips run from both coasts; the sunset slot goes first.

The Pilot Whales of the Strait
Short-finned pilot whales live year-round in the deep water between Tenerife and La Gomera, sharing it with bottlenose dolphins. There is no season to miss and nothing to sail far for. The operators worth paying for cut the engine, keep their distance and let the pod decide how close the morning gets.

The Walk Down Barranco de Masca
The ravine below Masca village drops six hundred metres through rock to a beach with no road out, so you leave by boat. It reopened with a hard daily cap, a booked entry slot and a compulsory helmet, and it is the one walk on this island you cannot decide to do over breakfast.

Tenerife has two weathers, and they are an hour apart.
The trade winds pile cloud against the north coast — the mar de nubes — while Costa Adeje bakes on the other side of the mountain. Grey over Puerto de la Cruz at breakfast tells you nothing about your afternoon. And when the calima blows Saharan dust across the island, the summit is usually sitting above it in clean air.
Book these before you fly to Tenerife.
Most of this island you can sort from the hotel the night before. These cannot wait — they run on permits, daily caps and ferry timetables that take no interest in when your flight lands.
- 01Teide Peak Hiking 3715mThe final path to the peak needs a free national-park permit, and the daily slots are taken months ahead.
- 02Tenerife Barranco de Masca: Guided hike + boat ride + transportThe gorge takes a fixed number of walkers a day on a booked entry slot. There is no ticket hut at the top of the path.
- 03Siam Park Entry TicketsSchool holidays fill the water park before the gates open, and the queue for tickets outlasts the queue for the slides.
- 04La Gomera Island Day Trip with LunchThe day trip runs on ferry sailings rather than on demand — miss the morning boat and the island is gone for the day.
